17U Grassroots rankings - First Pass 7/16/2020
It sounds bizarre to say it is too early in the season to be posting 17U Boys Grassroots rankings but here we are, four months into the Spring/Summer season and most of the planned tournaments have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you don't want to hear my thoughts on playing with the pandemic, scroll to the bottom for all the tournament ratings.
It is disheartening to think of all those great players, hoping to strut their stuff, sitting at home, isolated, and unable to spread their wings on a hardwood court. I have two grandsons (17U and 14U) that are getting tired of beating each other up in the driveway and so wish they could be competing. For many players, the Grassroots program is a ticket out of a bad situation. A college scholarship is a path to future success. I don't blame them if they push the envelope of CDC and local health recommendations for avoiding the Covid-19 virus.
But we have already found out how this pandemic reacts to our impatience. We grew tired of social isolation. We really wanted to get out on the courts, golf course, restaurants, and bars and now it is backfiring for us. I understand that Sam Page, St. Louis County commissioner, will be announcing that the county is going back to phase one. No groups, no gatherings, no basketball practices, no tournaments. It is really sad the way our federal government has let us down. Politics and re-elections are more important than our welfare. People are dying in record numbers because we blew off the deadly spread of this virus. Nearly 140,000 to date.
Greg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs head coach, just slammed the Governor and Lt. Governor of Texas for playing politics with people's lives. Rather than shut down the state and protect people, they want to get the economy going and infection rates have sky-rocketed. Opening schools for the fall may create another huge jump in infections which may shut us down for several years until we get a vaccine.
Here's what I think. Mask up and stay masked up for the next year. Treat everyone you meet like they are infected. You can be nice to people but act like they are infected. IF we all masked up, and I am including coaches, players, and fans, we might have a high school basketball season next winter.
IF we continue to refuse to mask because no one is going to take away our "rights" then this pandemic will go on for years. Kids will bring the infection home to parents and grandparents and a whole bunch of us in the higher risk category will be pushing up daisies.
I sure hope that the Grassroots tournaments are not a hot spot for more infections. I pray that every coach and player stays safe. We have to do more than hope that they don't get infected. I think we need to mask players up now. Get used to the new normal. This will be our lives for the next few years.
Enough on the pandemic. I am torn about posting ratings now because of my fears for players but since states have begun holding tournaments, I am going to look at team ratings. Earl Austin, Jr. has a nice article at Prep Hoops Missouri about all the St. Louis teams playing this weekend. I wish them all luck.
The ratings are currently calculated for Midwest and Central state tournaments. I have not pulled together all the teams into one ranking yet because so many tournaments have been canceled. If these 17U tournaments take place, I will post some more rankings later this month.
Here's what I have seen so far. The top 17U midwest teams include Indiana Elite 2021, Team Teddy Buckets, Wisconsin Playground UAA, D1 Indiana, Team Illinois International, and Indiana Elite TI. St. Louis Blazers have fared well but more St. Louis teams will hit the hardcourts this weekend so that will let me start to rank our local teams.
Good luck to all and stay safe.
